The Job of Sizing Commercial HVAC Units

Monday, January 30th, 2023

One of the most important parts of installing new commercial and industrial HVAC equipment is sizing it. To people unfamiliar with HVAC terms, this may sound like trying to determine the right physical size of the equipment.

But the “sizing” we’re referring to is the capacity of the unit to provide either heating or cooling (often both in the case of packaged rooftop units).

This sizing needs to take into account numerous factors about the facility.

When you schedule commercial or industrial HVAC installations/replacements with our expert technicians, they’ll go through several steps to size the new equipment so that it matches your facility’s requirements. Undersizing or oversizing equipment will result in inefficient performance and early unit failures.

The term hydronic heating is a broad one that covers several types of heating systems used in commercial, industrial, and residential buildings and facilities. It’s sometimes conflated with radiant heating, but radiant heating refers to a way heat moves through a space, while hydronic heating is the method used to produce the heat.

This might sound a bit confusing, but below we’ll go into what makes hydronic heating different from other heating types you may have installed for your commercial heating in Toronto, ON

Using Radiant Heating for Large, Open Commercial Spaces

The term radiant heating tends to mean something different in the commercial and industrial sector than it does in the residential. When you hear residential HVAC technicians talk about adding radiant heating to a house, they’re usually referring to heating using a boiler, a.k.a. hydronic heating. In hydronic heating, a boiler heats up water and sends it to terminal points such as radiators and baseboard heaters to raise their temperature, which then sends waves of heat into rooms. Other types of radiant heating in homes include electrical elements in the floor or walls that heat up building material and radiate heat indoors.

These methods are used in commercial buildings, but when technicians talk about using a radiant heating system for a commercial or industrial space, they usually mean radiant tube heating. The heat from these is still radiant, i.e. it doesn’t heat the air but instead sends infrared waves to heat the people and objects within that space. However, radiant heaters work much differently than hydronic systems, and they have a special use: they’re excellent at heating large, open spaces such as warehouses or spaces that are often exposed to the outside cold.

toxic-mold-growths-in-cornerMold is an insidious and serious issue for any building—residential, commercial, industrial. The development of mold creates a major two-prong problem. On one hand, mold can have a devastating impact on the health quality of indoor air.

The release of toxic mold spores is connected to numerous health issues, particularly respiratory ones, and they are especially harmful for people who have allergies and asthma. Mold issues will often lead to health code violations that can shutter a business. On the other hand, mold causes extensive damage to building material, rapidly ruining roofs and weakening structural supports.

Once mold starts to develop in your facility, you may have to schedule an expensive and work-disrupting mold remediation service. We want to help you avoid this in the first place with proper mold prevention.

5 Reasons to Have Customized Ductwork for Your Facility

Monday, September 26th, 2022

commercial-ventMost commercial and industrial facilities need ductwork for basic operation of their HVAC systems. Whether it’s for ventilation of fumes, proper circulation of fresh air, or the distribution of cooling and heating, these ducts handle a great deal of work.

Many duct systems are created from pre-manufactured pieces—off-the-shelf parts—which is a less expensive option than having professionals custom fabricate sheet metal ducts. But the small savings from standard ductwork isn’t worth much in the long run, especially when a facility’s ventilation system is expected to work for 10 to 15 years. Customized ductwork offers several major advantages. Here are five of the best reasons to either install customized ductwork or have it replace your existing pre-fabricated ductwork.
